Classic Apple Crumble

Ingredients
  

  • 6 apples peeled, cored, sliced
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour for crumble
  • 3/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon for crumble
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter cold, cubed
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans optional

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Toss apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1 tbsp flour. Transfer to baking dish.
  3. In a bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in butter until coarse crumbs form. Stir in nuts if using.
  4. Sprinkle crumble over apple mixture.
  5. Bake 40–45 minutes until topping is golden and apples are bubbling.
  6. Allow to cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with ice cream if desired.

Notes

For extra flavor, mix a pinch of cardamom into the crumble topping.
